Online Tutoring

We strongly recommend online sessions over face-to-face sessions.

Since there is no need to be at a specific place for a session, online sessions are more convenient than in-person sessions for both the client and the tutor. And because it is more efficient for us we charge a lower rate for online sessions than for face-to-face sessions. However, convienience is not the the primary reason we recommend online sessions.

Our experience has shown that online tutoring provides a better learning experience than traditional face-to-face tutoring. And we have reason to believe that our clients agree with this assessment: Since face-to-face tutoring became an option again in 2021 , none of our clients who initially chose online sessions later switched to face-to-face sessions.

We understand that some may worry about the impersonal nature of online learning. However, tutoring, unlike a lecture, is a conversation. Through live video conferencing on Google Meet and collaborative work on Conceptboard, we recreate the conversational feel of an in-person tutoring session. In fact, our online tutoring offers additional benefits, such as the ability to review recorded sessions and access materials anytime.

While we recognize that technical issues can arise, the frequency of technical disruption that we have experienced is on par with the frequency of disruption of any kind that we have experienced with in-person tutoring.

No matter the mode of delivery our commitment to personalized attention with an emphasis on active learning and problem-solving ensures that our students have the tools to achieve their academic goals.

The Technology We Use

There are three primary pieces of techonolgy which we use for online tutoring, Google Meet, Conceptboard, and YouTube.

Google Meet

We use Google Meet for video conferencing. There is no software to install and no account to set-up in order to use Meet. Once a client has scheduled a session the client will receive a link to their Meet. To join the Meet all the client needs do is click the link and give Meet permission to use their mic and camera.

During the session we may use the presentation feature of Meet to show you things such as graphics, parts of ebooks, webpages, and more as the need arises. Clients may also use the presentation feature for such purposes.

Conceptboard

We use Conceptboard, an interactive whiteboard with an infinite canvas, for online collaboration in the same way a tutor and client would write on shared piece of paper during an in-person session.

Like Meet there is no software to install or account to set-up to use Conceptboard. Once a client has scheduled a session they will receive a link, which can be opened in a browser, and password for the Conceptboard for the session.

Before the first session we go over the basics of Conceptboard, such as navigating around a board and loading images and other files into a board, with each client.

YouTube

Finally, a screencast is made of the session and it is uploaded to YouTube where a client can view it at their convenience. We typically set the privacy on YouTube to private and share it with the client via their Google account. If a client does not have a Google account,we can set the privacy to unlisted instead.
